Staying active can be difficult for older adults, particularly when it’s cold outside! Here are a few things that seniors can do to keep moving during the winter months:

  1. Swimming is a great, low impact exercise that is easy on the joints and a terrific cardio workout. Check to see if there are special programs at your local YMCA or Senior Center.
  2. Walking around a mall, grocery store, or indoor track is a wonderful way to keep moving! Walking can also be a good way to combine social engagement with exercising by walking with a friend or family member.
  3. Stretching can be done just about anywhere and is so important to do on a regular basis, especially during times of increased sitting. Chair yoga is an excellent form of yoga and stretching that combines mind and body exercises for older adults with physical limitations.
  4. Light hand weights can be used to help build muscle strength. Be careful not to use weights that are too heavy, as that can cause injury. A good rule of thumb is to start with the approximate equivalent of the weight of a soup can.
