Staying active can be difficult for older adults, particularly when it’s cold outside! Here are a few things that seniors can do to keep moving during the winter months:
- Swimming is a great, low impact exercise that is easy on the joints and a terrific cardio workout. Check to see if there are special programs at your local YMCA or Senior Center.
- Walking around a mall, grocery store, or indoor track is a wonderful way to keep moving! Walking can also be a good way to combine social engagement with exercising by walking with a friend or family member.
- Stretching can be done just about anywhere and is so important to do on a regular basis, especially during times of increased sitting. Chair yoga is an excellent form of yoga and stretching that combines mind and body exercises for older adults with physical limitations.
- Light hand weights can be used to help build muscle strength. Be careful not to use weights that are too heavy, as that can cause injury. A good rule of thumb is to start with the approximate equivalent of the weight of a soup can.
